Overview of Naturopathic Medicine:

Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system that blends modern science with traditional medicine. The naturopathic philosophy includes six basic principles:

  • The Healing Power of Nature. The belief that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. The naturopathic doctor provides therapies that support this process.
  • Doctor as teacher. Encouraging each patient through education to take an active role with respect to their health.
  • The principle to first do no harm is fundamental to the naturopathic practice.
  • To treat the causes of the disease, rather than the symptoms.
  • Each person's treatment is individualized and takes into consideration all the presenting symptoms and causative factors.
  • The belief that prevention is the best medicine for good health.
Naturopathic doctors are general practitioners who are trained to access, diagnose and treat various acute and chronic conditions. In addition to diet and lifestyle counseling, naturopathic modalities include botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, physical therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine/acupuncture.

In Canada, the naturopathic medical profession's foundation includes accredited educational institutions, professional licensing and national standards of practice.

Health Insurance Coverage:
Naturopathic visits are currently not covered by OHIP. However, many insurance providers do offer partial and/or full coverage under their respective plans. Hence, most motor vehicle accident ("MVA") patients are covered for their clinic visits and treatment. Acupuncture treatments would be covered under general naturopathic visits for insurance purposes.
